ABBA ARENA
ABBA ARENA
Project Overview – The ABBA Arena is a temporary venue that will remain in situ for a number of years before being demounted, the site vacated, and relocated in a different location. Whilst the service period in London is notably longer than typical temporary venues, the efficiency of construction and ability to demount and reuse the elements, both structural and architectural, play a significant part in the design. The theatre has a capacity of 3,000 spectators, 60% of which are seated. To accommodate the show design a “thrust stage” configuration was adopted in the Stufish design whilst the shape of the building is intended to remind of the brutalist style, and the external timber larch rain screen, attached to the support steel structure, brings softness to its acute geometry. The steelwork is designed using simple semi-axisymmetric steel construction comprising of a dome supported off a hexagonal perimeter structure. The roof superstructure contains a fully accessible grid that is supported by a series of 18 no. truss legs each with a steel grillage base detail. The roof and internal walls are clad in high performance acoustic panels. The audience seating tiers are wholly constructed of CLT with bars, experience tunnel, access corridor and lift shaft incorporated into the structure. A wrap around external concourse allows full audience access and facilitates the licensing requirements.
ES Global’s Role – ESG were commissioned to develop the supplied stage 3 designs, engineer, fabricate and install the theatre structure including all building services to accommodate the production. ESG were the Principle Contractor for works
